Oscars 2015 Predictions: 'Spotlight' Wins SAG; Back in Front-Runner Position?
The Screen Actors Guild awards were handed out on Saturday, continuing to add to the suspense of the current Oscar race.
"Spotlight" took home the prize for Best Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, leaving the overall race as a major mystery. "Spotlight" had been the presumed front-runner for a while until it lost the Producer's Guild Awards to "The Big Short." The latter film was expected to takeover the race as the front-runner, but could be back to the runner-up spot after "Spotlight's" latest win.
Other films that lost in this category included "Beasts of No Nations," "Straight Outta Compton" and "Trumbo;" none of those films ever had a shot at the big prize.
Other categories essentially solidified the Oscar race. Brie Larson, who won the Golden Globe for Best Actress, won the top award for Female Actress in a leading role. She beat out Cate Blanchett, Helen Mirren, Saoirse Ronan and Sarah Silverman for the awards and is now in line to win her first Oscar.
Leonardo DiCaprio will win his first Oscar for his performance in "The Revenant" after winning yet another accolade with the SAG award. DiCaprio also won the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for Best Actor. On Saturday he beat out Bryan Cranston, Johnny Depp, Michael Fassbender and Eddie Redmayne.
Alicia Vikander also solidified her position as the Oscar front-runner for Best Supporting Actress after winning the SAG. She also won the Golden Globe and Critics Choice for her work on "The Danish Girl." Rooney Mara, Rachel McAdams, Helen Mirren and Kate Winslet were the actresses that she defeated in this race.
Idris Elba was the only winner on SAG night that will not win an Oscar. The actor was infamously snubbed out of a nomination but was the winner on Saturday for his work on "Beasts of No Nations." He beat out Christian Bale, Mark Rylance, Michael Shannon and Jacob Tremblay; of the actors on the list, Tremblay ad Shannon were among the actors not nominated for the Oscar alongside Elba.
This of course solidified Sylvester Stallone's position in the race as none of the other Oscar nominees in this race, Bale and Rylance, were able to steal the spotlight. Stallone has won the Golden Globe and Critics Choice and is well on his way to Oscar Gold.
