‘Fast and Furious’ 8, 9 and 10 Release Dates Confirmed
The saga of "Fast and Furious" is nowhere near its end. It's been revealed that the franchise will be staging at least three more sequels with the release dates for the eighth, ninth and 10th films confirmed by star and producer Vin Diesel.
The fanbase of the successful franchise can consistently count on Diesel to unveil the latest news on the storied saga and it's no different this time around as the actor dropped the details on his Instagram account in an image that said, "2 decades, 10 films, 1 saga."
According to Diesel, the next film in the series, "Fast and Furious 8" is slated to be released in theaters on Apr. 14, 2017. Following this, the ninth film will come two years later on Apr. 19, 2019, while the final sequel -- so far -- will launch on Apr. 2, 2021, an entire 20 years after the original "The Fast and the Furious" hit the cinemas in 2001.
Of course, while the three films are only the only ones officially in the works at the moment, the team behind the franchise has freely discussed the possibility of many more movies being churned out in the future. Late last year, a report from Variety revealed that they are in the preliminary stages of crafting a bigger universe for the series including prequels and spin-offs for certain characters.
"We've written out story lines for various characters," Diesel told Variety. "We've been playing with it for a long time. It's a very rich property and we're committed to treating it with a lot of class."
Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley backed the lead actor of the franchise, saying they are indeed discussing how to expand the current world of "Fast and Furious".
"We're certainly in conversations about how we can expand the franchise now," she explained. "It's an ensemble cast and there's room to bring characters in and out."
For now, the team is focused on the next installment, which "Straight Outta Compton" director F. Gary Gray will be helming. According to Diesel, the director is set to introduce a darker side to the franchise and delve deeper into the characters.
Aside from a different perspective, the upcoming film will also feature an exotic new landscape. According to a report from Iceland Review, "Fast 8" will shoot some of the scenes in the West Iceland town of Akranes in April. Furthermore, the production is planning to stage the biggest explosion ever shot in the country.
