Marvel Embraces Diversity With First Black Spider-Man in Reboot Issue Number 1
Marvel has begun introducing a more diverse lineup of superheroes with the first black Spider-Man. The alter ego of the web-slinging character will be Miles Morales, a teenager of mixed racial background.
According to Comic Book Resources, a new reboot of the web-slinging hero, titled“Spider-Man #1,” has been launched by Marvel. The first issue was created by Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli. The comic will showcase the first ever mixed-race Spider-Man, with black and Hispanic roots. The new hero is part of Marvel’s huge effort to provide more diversity in comics.
Bendis said during an interview with Entertainment Weekly that Morales would deal with how people respond to his race in a positive and negative manner. One part will reveal that Spider-Man is brown-skinned, which will become a public issue. Miles will not be thrilled about people’s reactions towards his race and that aspect will affect his character over time.
“I have children of colour and I see what they watch and I see what they read, and I see how difficult it is for them to find something that isn’t the sassy best friend on some Nickelodeon show or something,” said Bendis. He added that he was determined to introduce an aspect of that culture positively for children, teenagers and adults.
The Guardian cited Bendis in explaining that Miles represents that anyone can be Spider-Man. Miles Morales has gained a huge following since he previously appeared in a number of Marvel Ultimate titles. Miles was bitten by an enhanced spider when he was 13 years old. Similar to his predecessor, the young superhero will be battling crime, as well as struggling with other aspects of teenage life, like doing homework and dealing with relationships. Morales has a huge responsibility, although he is still uncertain whether he will step up or shy away from it.
Bendis also teased the appearances of villains like Hammerhead and Black Cat, as well as other young superheroes like Kamala Khan.
The creator continued that the new reboot is not merely about diversity or introducing a black Spider-Man. People who have heard about Miles in a positive manner should try it so that they will realize that there is so much more meaning to it that will eventually surface. He added that they plan to bring the idea of Spider-Man into new areas in the best way possible.
