America Ferrera, Gloria Steinem Talk Hollywood Diversity at Makers Conference
America Ferrera is on a mission to make Hollywood a more diverse and accepting place for minorities from all walks of life.
The "Superstore" actress recently shared a Makers Conference stage with feminist icon Gloria Steinem where the need for inclusion across all levels of entertainment was one of the primary themes, Mashable reported.
"I think that the issue [of diversity in Hollywood] is multipronged and the solutions have to be multipronged as well," Ferrera said. "It's a long, long journey from inception of an idea to being on the Oscar stage."
The Q&A session began with the now-viral clip of Ferrera presenting at the 2016 Golden Globe awards alongside fellow Latina actress Eva Longoria where the two openly joked about seemingly having been mistaken for every other female Latina in the business.
In time, Ferrera recalled how her roles in "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" and "Ugly Betty" allowed her to finally carve out a niche in the industry "against all odds."
She stressed it's her constant recollection of experiences like those that have made her so committed to going the extra mile to "give a helping hand" to those who like her that come from unique circumstances and yet have truly authentic stories to share.
In the past, Ferrera has been bluntly critical of Hollywood over the lack of opportunities it affords Latinos, according to the Guardian. Before "Superstore," she last starred in a regular TV role on "Ugly Betty" more than five years ago, and she and Gina Rodriguez ("Jane The Virgin") are the only Latinas to ever win Golden Globe awards.
"When it comes to diversity and breaking stereotypes, and finding opportunities for nonwhite actors, progress gets made in these individual steps -- and we should celebrate them and reward them, especially when they're successful," she said.
"But I do think it's important to kind of also acknowledge that we have successes that don't necessarily end up in up watershed moments for diversity on television."
The Makers Conference was also attended by the likes of Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, U.S. Chief Technology Officer Megan Smith, actress Halle Berry, YouTube stars Glozell Green and Bethany Mota, Marvel's director of content development Sana Amanat and comedian Bridget Everett.
