NFL Draft 2014 News and Update: QB Teddy Bridgewater Took Out Insurance Policy in Case He Drops in Draft
The NFL Draft is a huge event. Thousands of fans, executives and future players crowd into Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan every May. This year the three-day event spans from May 8-10 and features exciting can't miss prospects like Jadeveon Clowney, Johnny Manziel and Teddy Bridgewater.
Clowney, a towering life-life Flash-meets-Hulk hybrid, is the best defender and prospect in the draft. He'll no doubt be taken within the first three selections. Manziel is another talented, flashy player who is likely the most mercurial player in the draft. Still, his arm strength and mobility, both musts for modern NFL quarterbacks, will likely have him selected somewhere in the top 10 to 15 picks. Bridgewater's draft stock, on the other hand, is plummeting faster than Johnny Depp's acting career. Yet, the former Louisville Cardinals Quarterback took out an insurance policy out on himself to help break his (possible) fall.
The type of policy he purchased is called loss-of-value insurance. If Bridgewater falls completely out of the first round of the May draft, despite early reports signaling that he was a top five selection, he can cash in a $5 million check. That type of dough comes with a gigantic asterisk, however. The maligned prospect needs to be able to prove, without a sliver of doubt, that his sullied draft stock stemmed from an injury or illness he had. The evaluation period is quite lengthy, so unless Bridgewater had a several month-long bout with pneumonia or something, this seems like it would be hard to prove.
Nevertheless, the policy is only costing the future NFLer $20,000. Being the first pick in the NFL draft compared with the first pick of the second round is a big financial mess. Players stand to lose upwards of 15 million dollars, according to Yahoo! Sports.
Sounds like a smart decision.
