Pole Dancing in Mexico Not Allowed Until Pope Francis Leaves The Country
Pole dancing has been postponed in Mexico due to Pope Francis’ visit.
Fox News Latino writes that the head of the Roman Catholic church is set to arrive in Mexico on Feb. 12, 2015 and will stay until Feb. 17. The Mexican Pole Fitness Federation stated that the Office of the President is preparing for the papal visit and its representatives met with regional sports officials on Feb. 3.
In particular, a regional pole-dancing contest in Morelia, the capital of Michoacan, set for Feb. 12, has been postponed until the Pope has left the city. The competition was moved to the week following the pontiff’s visit. The Southwestern Pole Sports Regional Championship was supposed to be held at Morelia’s Bicentenario Sports Complex, with pole dancers in different age groups coming from various states around the country coming to compete.
The officials of the National Physical Education and Sports Commission and Michoacan State Sports Institute discussed and agreed to handle all sports facilities so that these can be used by visitors who may be arriving to witness Pope Francis during his visit.
Based on the same Fox News Latino report, the pope will visit Mexico City, Tuxtla Gutierrez, Ecatepec, San Cristobal de las Cases and Morelia. Morelia will be the fourth city to be visited by Pope Francis. From Morelia, the pope will travel to the border city of Ciudad Juarez, where he is set to hold a special mass near the Rio Grande. He will return to the Vatican after.
According to Catholic Online, the main reason of Pope Francis in visiting Mexico is to pray to Our Lady of Guadalupe on behalf of the citizens of Mexico. The site is best known for having a miraculous image of Mary left on a cactus cloth in the 16th century. Pope Francis said that he has visited the shrine twice before he was elected. The pope also urged Mexicans to pray to the Lady of Guadalupe and to make their faith public, where it will grow stronger especially in difficult times.
Pole dancing or pole fitness is a very popular activity in Mexico. Metro said that there is even a Pole Dance National Day where pole dancers gather on the streets, in parks and other outdoor venues to perform in front of crowds.
More updates and details on Pope Francis’s visit to Mexico, as well as the suspension of pole dancing in the country, are expected soon.
