Denver Broncos Defeat Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50
The Denver Broncos leaned on their suffocating defense to pull off a 24-10 victory against the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50 on Sunday at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
The Broncos, who were considered underdogs heading into the biggest match of the 2015 NFL season, stopped Panthers quarterback Cam Newton on his tracks, sacking the league's Most Valuable Player six times, ESPN reported. The Panthers tried to lean on their high-octane offense but Denver's defense was too much on Sunday.
"There was a certain point where it was like guys on the sideline were saying, 'Cam is very stressed,'" Denver cornerback Bradley Roby said. "For two weeks straight, that's all we heard was 'Cam this, Cam that, dab this, dab that.' They were dabbing in their team photos. It was very disrespectful."
Von Miller starred for the Broncos, as he finished with 2.5 sacks, six tackles, two forced fumbles and two hurries. The 26-year-old stripped Newton twice in the match, including one in the final period that led to the game-clinching touchdown, which ended Carolina's comeback bid.
With his performance, Miller was named Super Bowl 50 Most Valuable Player, but the five-year veteran credited his teammates, particularly DeMarcus Ware and Derek Wolfe, for their superb display of defense against the Panthers.
"If I could cut this award, I would give it to DeMarcus and Wolfe and all the other guys," Miller told reporters, via ESPN. "That's what I would do. This is all great and stuff, but for me, I want to be with my guys. I would take the ring. The MVP is great, but I'll take the ring. I want to go in there with my teammates."
The victory also gave veteran quarterback Peyton Manning what could be a fitting end to his historic NFL career. The 39-year-old quarterback, who completed 13 of his 23 passes, won his second Super Bowl in four appearances.
According to SportsCenter, the veteran became the first starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl with two different teams. The first overall pick in the 1998 draft is now the oldest quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl.
When asked about his future, Manning said that he is not ready to make his decision on whether or not to return for another possible title run with the Broncos next season.
"I'll take some time to reflect," Manning told CBS. "I got a couple priorities first. I'm going to go kiss my wife and my kids. I'm going to drink a lot of Budweiser tonight. Take care of those things first."
