Mother's Day 2014: Treat Your Mom to Cronut Creator's New Breakfast Treat: Waffogato
Are you looking to do something new this Mother's Day? Feast your eyes on the latest indulgent creation from the chef behind the cronut. Available in time for Mother's Day weekend, the waffogato will certainly be a tasty new experience for any mother.
The waffogato will be for sale starting May 9 at Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York City. With Mother's Day just two days after on May 11, the bakery may be the place to be for trendy, food-loving mommies.
"I always like combining textures and also ideas," chef Dominique Ansel told The Wall Street Journal. "Sometimes it can be playful, and [you] have something fun and original."
The waffogato is a breakfast food combining a waffle, ice-cream, espresso and maple syrup.
"...vanilla ice cream waffle with Belgium waffle bits, slightly salted, and topped with maple-syrup espresso poured on top," Ansel detailed via Instagram. "As the ice cream melts, little tapioca pearls are revealed and float in the melted ice cream espresso sauce. #affogato #waffle #dessertforbreakfast #totn."
The treat is based off the "affogato," an Italian dessert. Ansel also drew inspiration from his childhood in France, where his mother used to serve him waffles.
"The food you love is the one you remember," Ansel explained. "Breakfast is waffles for me. It's such a big item."
Ansel's creation premiered last night at the Taste of the Nation fundraiser for the hungry. The fundraiser asked Ansel to create a breakfast-themed food. He had two months to get the job done.
"I always like to be challenged when doing new things," Ansel said.
Ansel describes his creation as "playful," "fun" and "not something you travel with."
"It's a little like a milkshake at the end," Ansel said. "I would recommend to eat it right away."
Although the waffogato debuted for charity last night, it won't be available to the public until Mother's Day weekend. That gives you plenty of time to figure out how to conquer the probable long lines (Ansel's cronut has drawn crowds outside his bakery).
"I think it's always fun for my customers to see new things," Ansel said.
Treating your mother to a waffogato will cost about $7.
