He needs Elena more than ever, but with her absence, he will be forced to create his own path, probably with some help from his brother.

“When his experience in the Phoenix stone leads him to do the unthinkable, Damon finds himself without a care in the world, spiraling out of control and under the influence of a dangerous and reckless Julian (guest star Todd Lasance). They sit in a bar, with Damon eventually getting in a ring to fight. Stefan was also in the scene and did his best to bring Damon’ back to his wits. Ecumenical News reported that Stefan will eventually discover the reason behind Damon’s downward spiral and will be angered as well.

In the previous episode, Damon was experiencing post-hell hallucinations, which incited him to do several unthinkable deeds. Finally, he decided to burn Henry’s spirit which continued to torment him, but subsequently realized that he actually burned Elena’s coffin, killing her in the process.
