Pope Francis shared his message on love, peace and unity as he urged the people to work together for the country's future. The pope received a warm welcome from the Mexican people the moment he arrived in the country wherein he'll be staying in for a week. The pope vistited some of Mexico's poorest places including the Mexican suburb Ecatepec.

"Help make this blessed land of Mexico a land of opportunities, where there will be no need to emigrate in order to dream," Pope told the people during his speech on Sunday, February 14. "No need to be exploited in order to work, that will not have to mourn men and women, young people and children who are destroyed at the hands of the dealers of death."

In addition to his call for unity, the pope also paid recognition to Christians who lost their lives for their faith. His statement referred to the ongoing persecutions that Christians went through not only in the Middle East but in most parts of the world. In addition to his open air mass in Ecatepec, the pope also shared his views on making a "dialogue with the devil" according to LA Times.

"You cannot dialogue with the devil, He will always win," the pope stated. "He will try to separate us, making a divided and fractious family, a divided and fractious society. A society of the few for the few."

Though most Mexicans welcomed the pope's arrival with an open heart, New York Times reported that his visit "came with a struggle" as several battles had taken place between the church and the state over the past decades. Things however lightened up after Mexico's church separated from the state after the anticlerical laws remained on the books.

Despite the cold relationship between the Mexican government and the church, the pope was welcomed by Enrique Pena Nieto, Mexico's president, and his wife Angelica Rivera.

In addition to his speech in love, unity and faith, Pope Francis condemned the drug trade and violence that is rampant all throughout the country.

"The Mexico of drug trafficking, the Mexico of the cartels, is not the Mexico that our mother loves." Pope Francis stated in reference to the Virgin Mary. "I would urge you to fight, day by day, against corruption, against trafficking, against war, against disunity, against organized crime, against human trafficking."

The pope arrived on Friday, February 11, 2016.
