The food choices are generally low in saturated fat, thereby minimizing the risk of diabetes, heart disease and other ailments. Vegetarians generally have a lower body mass index (BMI) and cancer rates compared to those who regularly eat meat.
To have sufficient protein, vegans get it from soy or rice milk, nuts, seeds, legumes, and beans. The average individual should consume about 50 grams of protein every day. Experts also caution people from doing fad diets that have low or zero nutritional value. There are plenty of food items today being labeled as vegetarian or vegan including ice cream, cookies, pizza, etc. Dieters should try to eat natural and organic food as much as possible. They should also stay away from substitutes like GMO soy and fake meats that are high in fat, sodium and preservatives. Other things to avoid include gelatin and casein. Read food labels to know which items are proper to consume.
Some items should be limited, such as Caesar dressing, refried beans and vegetable Pad Thai. Exchange dairy products with coconut cream and cashew cheese.
