Mars Recalls Its Chocolates - Here's Why
Mars Chocolate UK initiated a "voluntary" recall of their products in over 50 countries worldwide after a customer found pieces of plastic in one of their best-selling treats.
The Dutch chocolate manufacturer ordered the recall of the chocolates in the Netherlands, UK and Germany due to a possible contamination of the products.
According to the recall order, a customer found bits of red plastic in a bar of chocolate in Germany and complained to the company.
After initial investigations, the plastic was traced back to the factory located in the southern town of Veghel where the chocolate was made.
Apparently, the plastic bits were from a protective cover used during the manufacturing process.
While the case is an isolated incident, the company still decided to voluntarily take back the chocolate products that may have been contaminated to make sure no other similar cases arise.
"We cannot be sure that this plastic was only in that particular Snickers. We do not want any products on the market that may not meet our quality requirements, so we decided to take them all back," a spokesperson for the company said in a statement.
Recalled products were limited to those manufactured in the Dutch factory and covers the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Germany.
No Mars Chocolates products in the United States have been included in the recall.
The United Kingdom Food Standards Agency (FSA) released an update regarding the recall where a press release from Mars was attached.
In the file, Mars specified which products might be contaminated and warned consumers who purchased the products not to consume them under any circumstance.
