Latinas Who Have Dominated Oscar Fashion Over the Years
A few Latinas have walked the red carpet at the annual Academy Awards several times over the years, and every time they steal the spotlight. Whether or not they were nominees, their fashion choices had people talking.
Penélope Cruz
Academy Award-winning actress Penélope Cruz has graced the red carpet 11 times, and every single time she has shown she knows how to make a statement. One of her most popular looks was the nude-colored Atelier Versace gown that she wore to the 2007 ceremony.
Two years later in 2009, the year she took Best Supporting Actress for "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," she made white work in a bridal Pierre Balmain Haute Couture dress. At the 2010 Oscars she went for another strapless gown, but this time it was a dark red Donna Karan.
More recently, the Spanish star has opted for chiffon gowns, like her Armani Privé 2012 dress and 2014 pink Giambattista Valli, that are reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour.
Jennifer Lopez
At the 2001 Academy Awards ceremony, Jennifer Lopez wore a Chanel Haute Couture dress that cemented her status as a red carpet style star. She followed that with a mint green Valentino dress, inspired by Jackie Kennedy, at the 2003 show. The superstar wore green again three years later in 2006 with a dress by Jean Dessès.
At the 2012 award show, the Puerto Rican-American star showed off skin in a Zuhair Murad dress with sheer, sparkles and cut outs.
The star's most recent Oscars look diverted from the usual fitted-mermaid gown look she's become known for. Lopez wore a full blown blush princess gown by Elie Saab. What didn't change was the plunging neckline, a signature look for the star.
Salma Hayek
Salma Hayek is a film veteran, and when it comes to her red carpet looks, the Mexican-American actress is just as influential. One memorable look for the star was her Carolina Herrera black and white dress. She looked very feminine in the delicate lace bodice and white full skirt.
For the 2005 ceremony, Hayek opted for a figure-hugging navy Prada gown. She went for another blue look for the 2006 show in Versace, while she tried a very different, but equally memorable, look with her black and gold Alexander McQueen dress for the 2013 Oscars.
Zoe Saldana
Actress Zoe Saldana took a risk for the 2010 Academy Awards in a gown designed by Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy Couture's Spring 2010 collection. The dress had everything from layers to tulle to sparkles, all in a variety of shades of purple.
At the 2013 show she did layers again, but this time in a white and black Alexis Mabille dress. The actress went for unconventional look with a belted waist, lace decorated bodice and bow. For the 2015 award show, Saldana made headlines when she showed off her fit post-baby body in a blush Atelier Versace dress.
Honorable Mentions
Jessica Alba is known for her fashion choices, and her Academy Awards looks are no different. The actress rocked gold for the 2006 show with a fitted Versace dress, followed by a plum Marchesa gown in 2008 while pregnant with daughter Honor Warren.
Singer Mariah Carey made a rare appearance at the 2010 ceremony and made best dressed lists in a blue Valentino dress. At the 2015 show, Honduran-American star America Ferrera glowed in a silky green Jenny Packham dress and Irene Neuwirth jewelry, which included turquoise drop earrings.
That same year, Gina Rodriguez made her Oscars debut in a royal blue dress by designer Manon Gabard, as part of the Red Carpet Green Dress campaign, which promotes eco-friendly clothing.
