Type 1 Diabetes Linked to Increase Risk of Cancer: How to Reduce Diabetes Risk
Diabetes has been linked to several serious health complications. A new report suggests another reason why you should keep yourself from getting diabetes.
Diabetes Leads to More Health Problems
According to American Diabetes Association, diabetes may lead to several serious health complications, including food complication, ketoacidosis and ketones, gastro paresis, kidney disease, high blood pressure and stroke.
Apart from this, type 1 diabetes, in particular, also increases one's risk of developing cancer, per Fox News.
Per the report, earlier studies have revealed this fact already -- that diabetes increased one's cancer risk. However, those studies concentrated on patients with type 2 diabetes, but this study focused on type 1 diabetes.
Type 1 vs. Type 2 Diabetes
According to WebMD, for patients with type 1 diabetes, the symptoms start either in childhood or in young adulthood. These individuals go to physicians because of a serious and sudden spike in their blood sugar. In this case, episodes of low blood sugar level are common, and worse, patients cannot do anything to prevent the condition.
Meanwhile, type 2 diabetes is usually diagnosed during adulthood, although there is also an increasing number of children with the said condition. There are no episodes of low blood sugar level in this type of diabetes unless the patient takes insulin or diabetes medicines. The good thing about this type of diabetes is that it can be prevented. With a healthy and active lifestyle and a nutritious diet, one can prevent or delay this condition.
Type 1 Diabetes and Cancer
Since type 1 diabetes cannot be averted, it is important to examine its effects on one's health.
"The overall excess cancer risk among type 1 diabetes is moderate," study co-author Jessica H. Harding told Reuters. "People with type 1 diabetes should not be alarmed about the results from this study but follow current guidelines for cancer prevention and participate in national screening programs as per the general population."
Reduce Your Risk from Diabetes
Here are few tips from American Diabetes Association to keep yourself away from diabetes.
1) Maintain a Healthy Weight -- One way of keeping diabetes at bay is to keep a healthy weight. Aside from managing type 2 diabetes, having a healthy weight will also help you avoid cardiovascular problems, high blood pressure and high blood glucose.
2) Keep Active -- Take the time to do short exercise or engage in sports that you enjoy. Physical activities can do wonders for your health, so keep yourself active.
3) Eat Healthy Food -- In most cases, illnesses are due to what one eats. So, be meticulous with your food and choose the healthy options. By doing so, you are helping yourself conquer cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
