Meet @DeepDrumpf, the Twitterbot that Creepily Imitates Donald Trump: 'I'm Very Important Now'
A new Twitterbot known as @DeepDrumpf is almost making as many waves as Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump himself. Word is @DeepDrumpf has an uncanny ability to imitate the talkative real estate mogul and political neophyte, who has sent shock-waves through the GOP with his run toward becoming the official face of the party.
DeepDrumpf is the creation of MIT postdoc computer science student Bradley Hayes, who reportedly used an algorithm relying on a technique in artificial intelligence known as deep learning to bring the robot to life.
Computer Learns the Same way as the Human Brain
It all comes together with the computer learning in the same way the human brain does by following patterns exhibited by the targeted individual. Reports are Hayes went a step further by creating @DeepDrumpf as a combination of "deep" for deep learning and "Drumpf" for the candidate's less than flattering ancestral name, which television host John Oliver brought to light in a recent segment.
Robot Uses Trump Debate Transcripts and Campaign Speeches
The algorithm uses actual transcripts from GOP debates Trump has participated in, with text from a few of his campaign speeches also spliced in for substance. It then takes that fodder to tweet out made-up quotes from The Donald.
Based on Trump's typical use of simplistic language, word is researchers found it easier to fashion an algorithm that can mimic him than they might have with some other individuals.
"Trump's language tends to be more simplistic, so I figured that, as a modeling problem, he would be the most manageable candidate to study," said Hayes. "Much of my actual robotics research deals with these types of modeling techniques. I thought this would be a good way to learn more about some of the concepts, and have a little bit of fun in the process."
Based on Super Saturday results from March 5, @DeepDrumpf may soon have a lot more to say. Trump bagged primary wins in Kentucky and Louisiana to retain his sizable lead in party delegates. Texas Senator Ted Cruz also won two states.
