The Washington Redskins officially released quarterback Robert Griffin III on Monday. Griffin lost his starting job this season to Kirk Cousins and eventually became the team's third string quarterback.

It was expected that RG3 will be released before his $16.15 million salary for 2016 kicked in on March 9. The former second overall pick already cleaned up his locker room early in January, with the Redskins just hoping a team will trade for him.

He did not play a single game last season but was present at the end of the Redskins-Packers NFC Wildcard game, giving hugs and saying his goodbyes in the sidelines. The 26-year-old left a note to his locker room that referenced "The Paradoxical Commandments" by Dr. Kent M. Keith.

Griffin was released along with three other players including safeties Dashon Goldson and Jeron Johnson and defensive end Jason Hatcher.

Comments from the Redskins

"You get in a situation where you can do no right, no matter what you do. That's tough. This league will do that to everybody. It will humble you," defensive end Kedric Golston said. His coach Jay Gruden also has nothing but respect for RG3, considering all the things that he went through all season.

Redskins president Bruce Allen also praised Griffin's professionalism during an interview with XEPRS-AM in San Diego last Feb. 23. He said, "I know some people on the outside always like to be critical, but his teammates like him, his coaches like him, he does have some special talents and we wish him well."

Allen was also asked if any NFL team would be interested in signing RG3 for next season. He insisted that the former Heisman Trophy winner would eventually find a new home.

"I see Robert getting an opportunity with another team. We've heard from some teams that are interested. I think he's going to have a choice of a couple teams that will let him excel in the future," Allen said.

Where Could RG3 Play Next Season?

At least 10 teams are reportedly interested in signing Griffin despite his injury history and locker room problems. Some of the teams rumored to be involved in the RG3 sweepstakes include the Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Rams and Houston Texans.

The Dallas Cowboys are also linked because of Tony Romo's health and Jerry Jones' desire to land a quarterback. The San Francisco 49ers are also on the hunt for a quarterback under new head coach Chip Kelly and the Denver Broncos recently lost Peyton Manning to retirement.

The Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks are also potential landing spots for RG3.
