Weird, Odd Local News: Philadelphia Suspects Didn't Like Gas Prices; Shot a Hess Gas Station Clerk and Sold It Cheaper
Robin Hood is back. And he wants your gas. On Monday morning, police say modern day outlaws shot and robbed a teenage clerk for gasoline at a Hess station in southwest Philadelphia, all in the name of stealing the gas and selling it at a lower price.
The suspects reportedly shot the 18-year-old victim, tied him up, stole an undisclosed sum of money, and then served gas for "several hours," the victim's father and police said, CBS reports.
"He said he was told to stay quiet in the bathroom for two hours, while they were in there waiting on customers," the victim's father said.
Police now believe that the three suspects have robbed at least two other Hess stations in the short span of five days; both times they posed as deliverymen by wearing Hess shirts.
"He said the first guy came in, he seen the shirt and he thought it was one of the deliveries," the father explained. "The second guy came in with a gun to his head. Next thing you know, he tried to hit him, and the gun went off."
The bullet grazed the clerk's head. The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania has treated and released him.
"In my career, that's the first time I've seen or heard something like this occur," Lt. John Walker of the Philadelphia Police Department said. "Obviously they probably didn't feel like they got enough money, so they're going to sit there, take control of the business, offer gas at a discounted price and try to get additional money, which is just bizarre."
Dennis Moynihan, a Hess spokesman, commented on the unfortunate story.
"We are fully cooperating with law enforcement as well as conducting our own internal investigation," he said. "Safety for our guests and our employees is very important to us. However, for security reasons, the company's safety measures cannot be discussed publicly."
There is a lack of surveillance footage, and the only description of the suspects was that they were wearing hoodies, according to NBC. Philadelphia Police Department asks anyone with information on the three suspects to call 215-686-TIPS.
