Conor McGregor's Next Fight Will Likely be a Nate Diaz Rematch Before Frankie Edgar, Jose Aldo
UFC 200 is a couple of months away but one of the impending main cards for the July UFC pay-per-view seems imminently happening.
Conor McGregor may still be licking his wounds after falling to Nate Diaz at UFC 196 and “The Notorious” would like nothing less than to get that one back.
With McGregor still the UFC’s top draw, the word around is that a rematch between the two is likely to be made official soon, as early as this week. So where does this leave Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo who were hoping to get a shot at the UFC featherweight title?
All Eyes on New York
With the MMA finally made legal in New York, a potential event is likely to be made later this year. The best way to kick this off is to have McGregor in one of the cards again, and his most likely opponent could be Edgar.
McGregor’s striking coach Owen Roddy is one who would like to see the Irishman take on the former UFC lightweight champion, saying it would be a huge fight that's fit to happen at the Madison Square Garden.
“[McGregor and Edgar could fight] at featherweight or even at lightweight - Frankie spends a lot of time there, and he was the lightweight champion. But if Conor is on the card, it would be huge anywhere,” he said.
Roddy singles out the Irish population as well as Edgar’s roots in New Jersey as the reason why this fight would make all the sense in the world. It would be an easy sell and obviously something that will rack in revenue.
McGregor has to Beat Diaz First
That UFC event in New York is certainly something to consider, but the fact remains that McGregor must rebuild his stock following the loss to Diaz at UFC 196.
Despite initially claiming that he intends to defend his UFC featherweight title against Edgar or Aldo, a rematch with Diaz seems to be the way the UFC is going.
But there will be no sugar-coating for the sequel. The conditions will be the same, meaning McGregor will have to find a way to adjust to the 170 lbs.-mark against Diaz.
McGregor’s coach, John Kavanagh, believes that the rematch will be officially announced in the coming days.
"I believe it is going to be announced this week," said Kavanagh. "And, whoever it is there will be a group of fans that will go, 'Oh I didn't want to see that, I wanted to see this.' You know, no matter who you pick, there are gonna be people happy and there are gonna be people unhappy.”
