Sony, perhaps trying to stir up interest in its fledgling handheld market, has released a new PS Vita in America. The new model improves upon its predecessor in several ways (which is no surprise really), but it takes a big step back in one significant area: the quality of the display.

You can pickup the system for just $199.99 in a bundle that also includes Borderlands 2: Limited Edition and an 8GB memory card. Are these accessories worthy of being packaged with the PS Vita? You decide.

Borderlands 2 is the sequel to the 2007 Game of the Year and fellow top prize winner as well. The cell shaded action role-playing game is borderline addicting (pun intended). That 8GB card should be enough to hold a few full downloaded games or movies, plus your Borderlands game (it's bundled as a digital download). That being said the bundle looks like a pretty tight deal.

That said, the new Vita is a whopping 20 percent thinner and 15 percent lighter, according to GameSpot. Those numbers sound like notable differences, but it's hard to say without actually trying the Vita out for yourself. One gigabyte of built-in storage isn't huge, but it's perfect for saving your progress.

And now for that difference: the power hungry OLED (O for organic) has been replaced with a traditional LCD display. You'll be able to game longer, but without experiencing the gorgeous deep blacks and saturated colors associated with Sony's handheld in the past.

Not interested in portable games with PS3 quality graphics? You should still consider buying a Vita if you're a PS4 owner. With remote play, you can access your favorite PS4 games anywhere in the internet connected world. The control scheme is mostly the same, with just a DualShock 4-like touchpad relocated to the back of the device.

Do you think the latest update to the PS Vita will finally allow it to steal the handheld crown from Nintendo's 3DS? Or is the portable gaming space now too crowded due to the ascension of smartphone/tablet gameplay for Vita to make a difference? Either way let us know in the comments section below.
