There are two performances in Coachella's 16-year run that can never be matched.

One is Daft Punk's avant-garde LED show in 2006. The other, Prince's awe-inspiring set two years later, one aesthetically highlighted by his gold-sequined tunic and pants. Prince brought generations together that night, covering everything from the Beatles' "Come Together" to the B-52's "Rock Lobster" to his turn-of-the-century anthem "1999."

His haunting yet hypnotizing rendition of Radiohead's "Creep" may be the annual festival's most talked about song.

For some, this will be their lasting image of Prince, the soulful rocker who passed away Thursday at age 57. He leaves behind a hagiographic-like legacy, complemented by millions of adorning fans and dozens of award nominations over the last three decades.

Coachella artists reacted to news of Prince's death via Twitter. English singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding said "there will never be anyone else like you," and Rapper-actor Ice Cube asked "has anybody seen my childhood?"

The Purple One's presence will envelop the Empire Polo Club this weekend. Nothing is confirmed, but there's a good bet well-meaning musicians like Guns N' Roses, Ice Cube, and LCD Soundsystem pay tribute to the man -or unpronounceable symbol - that epitomized the 1980s, and the amalgam of funk, rock, an R&B so many artists imitate.

Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose already paid tribute to one band this week in wearing Nirvana's iconic smiley face t-shirt onstage during a Mexico City show. In that respect, covering a Prince song wouldn't be out of the question.
