Listeria Outbreak Sparks Massive Recall of 300 Frozen Vegetable Products Spanning the 50 States - The Symptoms
An outbreak of listeria has prompted a massive recall of frozen organic and non-organic vegetables across the U.S.
According to the Center for Disease Control, the items in question were packaged by CRF Frozen Foods and could include as many as 358 products under 42 different brands. Among the stores where the products were sold are Safeway, Costco and Trader Joe's outlets spanning all 50 states.
So far, authorities note eight people have hospitalized according to CBS with two people dying from other causes.
Consumers Urged to Discard any Potentially Dangerous Items
Washington State based CRF issued a voluntary recall back in April, which included suspending operations at its Pasco facility. Earlier this month, company officials extended the recall to include all of its organic fruits and vegetables, sternly advising customers to throw out or return any such products they had purchased.
Among the potentially contaminated items listed are non-organic broccoli, butternut squash, carrots, cauliflower, corn, edamame, green beans, Italian beans, kale, leeks, lima beans, onions, peas, pepper strips, potatoes, potato medley, root medley, spinach, sweet potatoes, various vegetable medleys, blends, and stir fry packages, blueberries, cherries, cranberries, peaches, raspberries, and strawberries.
All the products in question were processed during the first week of May and are believed to carry sell by dates between April 26, 2016 and April 26, 2018.
In a press release, CRF execs warned, "Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems."
Listeria Symptoms are Numerous Scenes
Listerian infections can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths and among its symptoms are high-fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
Costco and Trader Joe's have also issued recall spanning their potentially affected areas.
