Chile vs. Panama Copa America 2016 Preview, Prediction, Schedule, Live Stream As Teams Battle for Second Place in Group D
Chile and Panama do battle for second place in the Copa America Group D on Tuesday.
Both sides enter this game needing a win to move on to the next round.
Chile has advantage to second place
Chile has the upper hand thanks to an even goal differential. After losing 2-1 against Argentina in heartbreaking fashion, La Roja managed a dramatic 2-1 win over Bolivia thanks to an absurdly long extra time in the second half. Arturo Vidal, the hero on the night, scored a penalty shot goal in the 10th minute (!) of stoppage time to win the game. Of course that game was filled with a plethora of drama throughout and Chile was undeniably the better side, dominating possession and creating one great chance after another on the way to a solid win.
Panama's situation is direr. Panama also managed a 2-1 win over Bolivia thanks to a late goal. However, Panama was no match for Argentina's genius Lionel Messi, ultimately succumbing to his brilliance the moment he stepped on the pitch in the 60th minute. Prior to that Panama had held things together against Argentina with just 10 men on the pitch. They wound up losing 5-0.
Road to quarterfinals
Panama's -4 goal differential means that they would only qualify with a win over Chile. A draw would give Chile second place. Panama would only win first place if it manages to win by 10 or more goals, assuming Argentina loses by one to Bolivia. Neither is highly likely, so a win will have to do for Panama to move onto the second round of the tournament.
Chile's road to second place is more varied. A draw keeps them in second and sets up a date with the winner of Group C. A win by six or more goals coupled with an Argentina loss by one goal puts them into the second round as the group winners. Again, those two scenarios coming together are also unlikely.
Player to Watch
Arturo Vidal was the hero for Chile on Friday but Alexis Sanchez was the true lynchpin for Chile's attack.
History Favors Chile
Chile has two wins and one draw against Panama.
Prediction
Chile wins the game 3-0.
