Whitney Houston Auction Nets $500,000 After Judge Blocks Sell of 1986 Emmy Award
Keepsakes once belonging to legendary singer Whitney Houston have sold for more than $500,000 at auction.
Heritage Auctions reports the top selling items were a pair of Nike Air Jordan sneakers gifted to the late singer by hoops icon Michael Jordan and a Dolce & Gabbana fur coat she once wore on stage, which sold for $20,000 and $16,000 respectively.
Auction Nets $500,000 in Profits
In all, the auction netted sales of more than $500,000, despite a federal judge ruling that Houston's 1986 Emmy Award trophy could not be part of the lot offered.
The auction also featured various costumes worn by Houston, as well as gold records she won during her Hall of Fame career. Houston died in 2012 at age 48 and authorities later determined she had drugs in her system at the time of her death.
In rendering his decision, U.S. District Judge Percy Anderson ruled the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences had shown itself to be the owners of the award and had shown it would likely suffer irreparable harm if the award was sold.
Trophy Back in Family's Possession
The trophy has since been returned to Houston's family. The award was for her 1986 performance of "Saving All My Love for You."
A number of Houston's other awards, including her 1993 Billboard Award for "I Will Always Love You," were sold as part of the lot.
Houston's only child, daughter Bobbi Kristina, died earlier this year and has since been buried next to her mother at a New Jersey cemetery. Houston gave birth while still married to famed singer Bobby Brown, in what was the only child born to the superstar couple.
