The host nation finally looked like a contender in its recent round of 16 game against Ireland. After falling behind 1-0 thanks to an early penalty, the hosts seemed to get the wakeup call that has eluded them all tournament. Antoine Griezmann seemed to find his gear the quickest, scoring two goals for his country to vault France to a 2-1 win that has them in the final eight.
Iceland's story is rather different. Largely expected to fail at the first hurdle of group stages, the little nation has gotten better and better as this tournament has unfolded. After being dominated by Portugal in the opener, the team managed two get two draws and then a win over Austria at the death. Its recent 2-1 win over England was by far the most impressive display as the team took an early lead and then held on for the balance of the game with impressively organized defense.
