The May final was the result of a penalty miss by Juanfran Torres, who incidentally was the hero in a penalty shootout a few rounds earlier against his team's first opponent in this year's tournament - PSV Eindhoven.

The two teams met in the round of 16 and battled to a 0-0 draw across two games before heading into a lengthy penalty shootout. Neither team's goalkeeper could make a difference in the game until Luciano Narsingh hit his shot off target, setting the stage for the Spanish defender to finish the game. He did just that and Atletico would march all the way to the final.

PSV will likely be looking for revenge at home to start the tournament.
