Mexican drug lord 'El Chapo' Guzman tortured in prison?
The federal prison on the suburbs of Ciudad Juarez bordering El Paso, Texas is no haven for any prisoners particularly for the drug lord himself Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. His attorneys released reports of him getting mistreated and tortured.
"El Chapo" claimed that he is a victim of torture prompting one of his lawyers to present proofs that he is indeed receiving abusive treatment. According to one of his lawyers, Attorney Jose Refugio Rodriguez, the cruel and unconventional treatment is considerably torture.
Guzman's attorneys already complained before that he is not permitted to sleep, mingle with other prisoners or get enough visits. They said that these things are the reasons for his anxiety and raised blood pressure reaching risky levels, abc News reported.
According to the government, strict security measures are needed to prevent Guzman's escape as what happened last 2015 where he escaped the "tight" security in Altiplano prison near Mexico City. That second prison break humiliated the Mexican government most especially the Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.
The drug kingpin has no hair as informed by Rodriguez to the local radio station and worried sick that his client became addicted to the medication he is taking to maintain his blood pressure, as reported by Mail Online.
Previously, it was reported that Guzman will be extradited to the US but a Mexican judge postponed the extradition. His lawyers filed appeals seeking to thwart the decision of his transfer to the US custody to face charges in the states of California and Texas. When transferred, he will deal with the charges against money laundering, drug-trafficking, murder, and weapons.
The Mexican government changed their mind about keeping him in their custody especially that the death penalty has been expunged after his two escapes from prison. He is currently kept under maximum security in the state prison situated in the vicinity of Ciudad Juarez bordering El Paso, Texas.
