Atlanta High School Shooting: 17-Year-Old Arrested for Shooting 4 Students Near Georgia High School
A 17-year-old student was arrested and charged with five counts of aggravated assault after he allegedly shot and injured five people near a southwest Atlanta high school on Tuesday.
According to My Fox Atlanta, the suspect has been identified as Marcellus Brooks and is being held at the Fulton County jail.
Witnesses told the news station that a group of 30 to 35 people were seen arguing near Therrell High School campus when someone pulled out a gun and started firing Tuesday afternoon. At around 4 p.m. Atlanta Police officers responded to a call about a shooting.
Authorities say that five people were shot, including four Therrell students; however, all five victims were reported to be in stable condition.
Atlanta Police officer John Chafee said that a motive for the shooting has not been determined.
According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the accused shooter was also reported to be a student at the high school and was out on bond for robbery. He was arrested in April by MARTA police in connection with a robbery on March 29. He spent 15 days in jail before posting a $8,000 bond, according to Fulton County Superior Court records. The jail records also show that he pleaded not guilty last week to a felony robbery charge.
Atlanta Public Schools (APS) and the Atlanta Police Department provided extra campus security at the school on Wednesday. In addition, APS spokeswoman Kimberly Willis Green said that "as a safety precaution... students will not be permitted to carry book bags or backpacks for the remainder of the school year."
The Chairman of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners released a statement, calling the shootings "particularly upsetting and distressing."
"When our young people are victimized by the crime of our city streets, it serves as a sad reminder of the challenges we as leaders confront in trying to make our streets safer for Fulton County families," Chairman John Eaves said.
