'Mr. Robot' actor Rami Malek confirmed to play Freddie Mercury in 'Bohemian Rhapsody' biopic
Rami Malek has confirmed to play the iconic Freddie Mercury, Queen's prolific frontman, in the upcoming biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody." The 35-year old actor will work with "X-Men: Apocalypse" director Bryan Singer, who made the announcement on his Instagram account regarding the actor's involvement.
Malek is best known for his role as Elliot Alderson, a neurotic hacker in Mr. Robot. He won the Emmy Awards for the best actor nod, beating Kevin Spacey and Matthew Rhys.
The biopic has been in production for 8 years with Roger Taylor and Brian May as the music producers. Sacha Baron Cohen was originally cast as Mercury but disagreements had happened earlier this year about the direction of the film, which made Cohen walk away from the project. According to a US radio host, Howard Stern said that Cohen disagreed with May and Taylor over how much of the film should be dedicated to Mercury, The Guardian has reported.
According to May, Baron had acted like an "arse." He claimed that they had a nice time with Sacha exchanging ideas but he went off and told lies about what happened. May hoped Ben Whishaw, who he called a "real actor," to take over the lead role.
According to The Sun, Singer took to Instagram to announced the casting of the biopic. He used an iconic picture of Queen in the Bohemian Rhapsody video and stated that he is looking forward to @ramimalek playing as Freddie together. A series of hashtags with the name of all four Queen members, the band's name and the Bohemian Rhapsody made up the rest of the text.
The new role will see Rami Malek taking the new challenge of playing the peculiar Queen frontman, Mercury, who died at the age of 45 in 1991 following complications related to AIDS. He became a legend for his work in being the lead singer of Queen. His biopic is set to start shooting in early 2017.
