Aaron Hernandez Murder Case: Probable Cause Hearing Delayed
For months now, NFL star Aaron Hernandez of the New England Patriots has been at the center of investigations for a homicide case. And his once thriving sports career has now taken a turn for the worse.
On Jun. 26, Hernandez, 23, was arrested at his North Attleborough, Mass. home and charged with the murder of former semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd.
Lloyd's body was found days earlier at an industrial park about a mile away from Hernandez's home with a gun shot at the back of his head. Investigators say the victim was seen by surveillance cameras with Hernandez on the night of the murder.
Authorities believe Hernandez orchestrated the killing of Lloyd who is said to be the boyfriend of the sister of Hernandez's girlfriend. The NFL star has pleaded not guilty.
Last Wednesday, Hernandez appeared in court for his supposed probable cause hearing. However, as more evidence is continuously being gathered and presented by the prosecutors against Hernandez, they have asked to delay the probable cause hearing for 30 more days to allow a grand jury more time to review the case.
According to news reports by CNN, the initial grand jury when the case started has taken a break, and a new panel of grand jury is set to convene and hear the case. For this reason, the prosecutors are requesting a little more time. The report quotes Bristol County prosecutor William McCauley as saying, "We have done everything in our power to present it as expeditiously as possible. Requesting a further date based on the inability to have enough time before the grand jury, I think, is warranted."
Hernandez's attorney James Sultan strongly opposed the request to delay the probable cause hearing. According to CNN, Sultan was quick to argue saying, "[The prosecution] is not entitled to proceed on whatever pace it might choose."
At the end, the judge sided with the prosecutor delaying the probable cause hearing to Aug. 22. Hernandez is now held without bail.
