Nikola Tesla's Former NY Laboratory Could Become His Museum, But Will Tesla Motors' Elon Musk Finance the Project?
Inventor Nikola Tesla was responsible for some excellent ideas and innovations that we still use to this day, and now many want him honored through a museum.
Popular Internet cartoonist Matthew Inman has used his comics to try and turn Tesla's former laboratory in Shoreham, New York into a museum.
Tesla developed the basis for AC power and obtained over 100 patents, among other ideas and innovations. Inman has partnered with the nonprofit group the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe to garner even more interest in the museum.
Inman used the donation website Indiegogo to help raise more than $1.3 million in 2012 when the former lab was up for sale. That saved the property, but it isn't enough to renovate it and turn it into a museum.
Seeking more donations and financial assistance for the museum, Inman turned to Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Motors. Tesla is named after the inventor.
Inman used his web comic series to speak to Musk. He first published a comic that showed "What it's like to own a Tesla Model S." He showed his excitement for the electric car. Then, in a second comic he directly reached out to Musk.
"Elon Musk, if you're reading this: You owe us nothing, and you've done nothing but good things in the name of Nikola Tesla," Inman wrote in his endearing handwriting-esque typeface. "But the fact remains: Tesla Motors, a company now worth billions, is using Nikola Tesla's name and they're using his technology, and all we want in return is a little bit of help."
Inman said that automobiles have AC induction motors and use Tesla's name, but there's no connection in the cars to Nikola Tesla or anyone in his family. Tesla invented the AC induction motor in 1888 according to the Tesla Memorial Society of New York.
"But the idea of a car company using someone else's family name without any formal connection to them is a slightly arresting notion," Inman wrote. "It would be like naming a company 'Steve Jobs Hoverbikes' 50 years from now, regardless of any ties to Apple or Jobs himself."
Musk donated $2,500 to the museum fund at a fundraiser, according to Inman. However, Inman says to open the museum he would need about $8 million.
Musk and Inman tweeted about the museum. Inman asked for Musk's help and Musk returned the tweet with the following response: "I would be happy to help."
If that means Musk would donate the full $8 million, the museum could open very soon. Tesla Motors has not commented on the donation or how much he would donate.
