Fight Night Excitement at UFC Albany and 206: Holloway Wins Over Pettis
UFC Fight Night in Albany found Derrick Lewis and Francis Ngannou as the two grand winners. Lewis, one of the most powerful prospects in the heavyweight division of UFC, defeated Shamil Abdurakhimov in the fourth round of the fight. In the first three rounds, Abdurakhimov has tactfully evaded the hard punches of Lewis and has caught Lewis's kicks.
After the third round, Lewis got some advice from Bob Perez, his coach; he stopped the kicks and started head-hunting. Finally, he was able to land his most powerful blow, eventually bagging the victory; referee Dan Miragliotta had to intervene to stop the fight after Lewis had Abdurakhimov grounded and punched him repeatedly.
But even after the win, Lewis looked quite upset with his performance. He labeled his performance as 'one of the worst in his career', reports The Sun. Francis Ngannou was another winner in a parallel event, as Anthony Hamilton was submitted by him. After Hamilton pushed him to the fence, Ngannou grabbed him by the arm and eventually took him to the mat.
UFC 206 in Toronto has witnessed Max Holloway's (17-3-0) victory against Antony Pettis (19-6-0) by technical knockout, rewarding Holloway the interim featherweight title the last Saturday night. There will be a fight between Jose Aldo and Holloway to announce the final winner.
In the first round, the fighters made energetic moves without much throwing. A variety of kicks thrown by Pettis did not show much effect. Holloway was keen on using boxing tricks and hit Pettis with looping punches. Pettis got his right eye hurt and it created a vision blur. Holloway threw a lot of punches to the body and later used hard body kicks and punches to the head, to get the victory. The fight was stopped after Pettis was 'forced to cover up by the cage', says the Los Angeles Times.
The fight was not as exciting as the previous two fights, but it was a remarkable achievement for Holloway to retain his consistency as a powerful fighter. He is now acknowledged to be a leading fighter of the game and his fight against Aldo is expected to be pretty much exciting. On the other hand, Pettis, who was once considered a superstar, is gradually losing his rank.
