The Billboard Music Awards are this Sunday, but before getting excited about the red carpet, here's a look at past red carpets. Our goal was to find celebrities who looked good and felt as confident as Beyoncé did in the above picture. After seeing many questionable outfits, here are our top picks for best dressed from past years.

Emmy Rossum: Sheer is so hard to pull off, but Emmy Rossum stunned in this velvet Zuhair Murad dress. The dress had a lot of visual interest, and it was sexy without being over the top. Also, she deserves some recognition for wearing velvet in the Las Vegas heat.

Jennifer Lopez: That same year Jennifer Lopez wore her go-to designer, Zuhair Murad. The dress also features a sheer overlay, which helps her not show both too much cleavage and too much leg. It helps keep it balanced, and this sleek silhouette is extremely flattering on Lopez.

Selena Gomez: Selena Gomez took it very high fashion to the award show in 2013. She wore this Atelier Versace dress that she paired with Jimmy Choo shoes. This dress works because it's not too grown up on Gomez. Without the colorful pieces, it would just be too serious and too sexy. But the added color gives it a playfulness that a woman in her early 20s definitely needs.

Zooey Deschanel: Zooey Deschanel loves all things cute, and though her normal saccharine style is too much, this is the right look for her. The Moschino dress is sweet and adorable, but it calls back to the 1960s, which is much more in her wheelhouse than the fit-and-flare dresses reminiscent of the 1950s that she tends to favor. The orange lip is a surprising touch, and this time going with a theme paid off.

Taylor Swift: Taylor Swift hardly ever has a misstep on the red carpet, but she's definitely guilty of going too far with the shine and princess-style dresses. This Elie Saab dress gives her some edge and is more interesting than more intricate but flesh colored dresses. This year she will top this look, as she has been on a more adult kick recently.

Rihanna: Rihanna has been known to show a lot of skin, but the thing about her is that you never know how she'll show up to a show. More than anything, she loves to switch it up on the red carpet, and this Max Azria suit is sharp and she's almost completely covered up. But it's still completely feminine.
