Ohio Kindergarten Teacher Allegedly Caught on Camera Shaking 6-Year-Old Student: Parents Push for Legal Action [Video]
An Ohio kindergarten teacher was suspended for 10 days after she was allegedly caught on camera grabbing and shaking a 6-year-old student. However, the parents of the boy are pushing to take legal action against the teacher and get her fired.
The parents of Ian Nelson say they were horrified after they watched Barb Williams, a kindergarten teacher who has been at Riverdale Schools for 14 years, forcefully shake their son in a surveillance video taken on May 7. In the video, Williams is seen approaching the boy after he appears to come out of a bathroom. That's when she picks him up and pins him against the wall. She also appears to lift him off the ground by holding his face and then his shirt.
Now, the Wharton parents are seeking to take legal action because a 10-day unpaid suspension is not good enough. Instead, they plan to file criminal charges.
"I would consider what would happen to myself, if I were to do that to her. If I were to do that to her, I would go to jail," Ian's father, Anthony Nelson, told WAFF.
After watching the surveillance footage, the boy's mother, Autumn Nelson, told NBC's TODAY that she was "in complete and utter shock."
"I was crying. It broke my heart to see my child get harmed by a complete stranger," she said.
"They should have fired her when they found out about the whole situation, that she put her hands on him,'' she added.
It remains unclear why Williams was upset with the boy in the first place.
"You don't ever want somebody's child to go through that,'' Riverdale Local Schools superintendent Eric Hoffman told TODAY. "That's not what we're about. And we move forward."
