Is Wayne Rooney in talks to resign from Manchester United? According to reports, the English superstar is working on signing a new deal with his current club in hopes of extending his stay.

ESPN reports, "Wayne Rooney has begun initial discussions over a new contract at Manchester United, but sources on both sides of negotiations maintain that no deal has yet been struck."

This is actually a rather surprising turn of events, especially in light of United's recent signing of Juan Mata. Rooney generally plays behind striker Robin van Persie (or Javier Hernandez when Rooney is not on the pitch) and has been extremely productive in 2013-14 with nine goals and nine assists thus far this season. Mata usually occupies the same area on the pitch and is known for his precise passes, creativity and tremendous vision.

Mata has already noted that he is willing to play anywhere that Moyes wants him to play, a likely sign that he probably be moved to the wing; this could mean that Shinji Kagawa's time at Manchester United has come to an end. The Japanese star has repeatedly stated that he is frustrated with his lack of playing time; most of his time on the pitch has been on the wing.

Retaining Rooney would be a huge victory for United as the superstar was making every attempt to leave the club this past summer; there were rumors that Chelsea was looking to buy him. It would also be surprising considering the team's plummet down the standings and its inability to maintain a solid rhythm in the midfield.
