In the latest food contamination debacle, The National Beef Packing Company, a firm based in Liberal, Kan., recalled more than 50,000 pounds of ground beef because it may be contaminated with E. coli, according to Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) who made the announcement on Wednesday.
The beef was sent to retailers, wholesalers and food services distributers across the country on Jul. 18. The products are labeled with the establishment number "EST .208A" inside the USDA mark of inspection.
E. coli 0157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacteria that cause a host of conditions including, diarrhea, dehydration and kidney failure.
"This recall is voluntary," National Beef said in a statement posted on their website. "We are working closely with authorities to investigate this matter and are contacting out customers who have purchased this product."
This is the second time in a little over a month that National Beef has issued a beef recall. On Jun. 18, the company recalled almost 23,000 pounds of ground beef due to E. coli contamination.
The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service said neither it nor the company had received any reports of illness associated with the products.
