Jared Remy Guilty: Son of Red Sox Broadcaster Is Sentenced to Life in Prison Without Parole
The son of popular Boston Red Sox broadcaster and former player Jerry Remy was sentenced to life in prison for killing his girlfriend, Jennifer Martel.
On Tuesday, 35-year-old Jared Remey admitted to the stabbing death of Martel, according to ABC News. The life sentence also comes without any opportunity for parole.
Remy was also charged with and found guilty of other crimes stemming from the fact that he attacked three neighbors after they tried, in vain, to save Martel's life.
Despite pleading guilty, Remy told Judge Kathe Tuttman that his girlfriend brandished a knife and threatened him.
"She had a knife in her hand. She was threatening me about my daughter," Remy told the judge in a calm voice.
Whether or not Miss Martel threatened Remy or not, the heinousness of his crime cannot be overlooked. In a fit of unadulterated rage, Remy stabbed his girlfriend repeatedly inside their Waltham apartment. He continued his savage attack even as Martel crawled outside onto a patio in a desperate bid to escape.
It's important to note that the stabbing attacked wasn't an isolated incident. Remy had history of domestic violence before. Take the events of Aug. 13, 2013, as an example of his brutality. Just two days before the murder took place, Remy was arrested and booked after pushing his girlfriend into a mirror.
An ominous Facebook posting by the deceased alluded to her troubling romance. "Jennifer Martel is in a complicated (Relationship)," she wrote just moments before her life was taken. Sadly it seems like the message was read to late.
The Martel family is surely grief-stricken, and so is Remy's broadcasting father. The crime so affected the elder Remy, that for a time, he seriously considered walking away from his longstanding broadcasting career for good. He wasn't sure how the fans and public at large would take to his presence.
Do you agree with the sentence the judge handed down? If Massachusetts State Law allowed executions to take place, do you think Remy would have deserved that sentence instead? Let us know in the comments section below.
