NBA News: Kings To Waive Matt Barnes To Complete Boogie Trade
It is reportedly the end of the line for Matt Barnes' tenure in Sac-town. As confirmed by several league sources, the Sacramento Kings are expected to waive Barnes in order to complete the recent blockbuster deal that would send All-Star big Demarcus Cousins over to the New Orleans Pelicans
After Sunday's shocking trade that sent DeMarcus Cousins and Omri Casspi to the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for rookie Buddy Hield, Langston Galloway, Tyreke Evans and picks, the Kings have some roster management to do. According to CSN, as per NBA rules, they must waive one player in order to make room for the three incoming players.
With that, Matt Barnes has been the chosen player to be waived in order for the Kings to complete the DeMarcus Cousins trade, which will send out two players in exchange for three. This leaves one player needed to either be packaged along with the trade or be waived.
A Sacramento native, Barnes not only became the Kings' locker room leader this season, but head coach Dave Joerger also relied heavily on the veteran as injuries piled up. This gave him some added minutes on the floor.
However, Barnes is not having a statistically good season this year, shooting just 32.7% from three and playing inconsistent defense, along with hurting the team with some off-court distractions and added complaints to the referees. The move has also signaled a shift towards a total and proper rebuild for the kings, with young players and draft, picks as their main priority.
According to Sactown Royalty, Barnes, at 36, signed a two-year, $12.5 million deal with the Kings during the summer that features a player option for his second season. Sacramento is also allowed to use the stretch provision for Barnes' salary, which they can break it up over a five-year stretch.
Barnes averaged 7.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in 25.3 minutes of action per game through 54 games. He also started 13 of those games.
