Samsung Choose to Add Facial Recognition and Iris Scanning to Unlock Galaxy S8
Samsung has been rolling out a new iris scanning technology designed to support the device security of Galaxy Note 7. But now, it appears that Samsung will include a facial recognition feature to Samsung Galaxy S8 to unlock the phone more easily.
According to CNET, this extra security option will come to be an iris scanner and a typical fingerprint sensor, but if the fingerprint sensor may not be seen in Galaxy S8, the leaks suggest that Samsung may move that sensor at the back of the phone. However, it appears that Samsung is now having problems with the Galaxy S8's iris scanner technology.
As indicated by the new report, a person claims that the iris scanning was found to be disappointing in terms of accuracy. The face scanning application that particularly works in less than 0.01 seconds is thought to be a simply exaggerated.
Meanwhile, Phone Arena reported that the prototype are also currently in testing, but it still remain unclear if the iris scanning technology will be dropped and will be repurposed for the face recognition, or either both will be used. This technique of unlocking by using unique patterns like eyes as an identification still remains up for debate.
If Samsung Galaxy S8 will include the facial recognition, in the recent rumors, Apple will also be using the same feature on its upcoming iPhone 8. The two giant companies Apple and Samsung have been historical rivals in term of smartphone race, even if Samsung was recently signing up a deal to manufacture the iPhone's newest flagship's in the OLED display.
It is worth noticing that Android has already had a built-in face unlocking, as a part of Smart Lock functionality. With this, Google will have an easy choice, as face detection in Google does not require any special hardware, instead, it uses the front camera only.
