Demi Lovato has finally bid farewell to her alcohol addiction after being sober for five years. The 24-year-old believes it to be a new breakthrough as she seems to be quite proud of being clear-headed.

The former Disney Channel star publicized her struggle with substance abuse, depression, alcohol addiction and self-harm, which ultimately led to release her all-time famous single "Skyscraper." The poignant track was labeled soul-stirring as the then 18-year old Demi Lovato explained her life as a "nightmare," reports PEOPLE.

The "Cool for the Summer" marvel, previously reported to Refinery 29 that there was a time when she wasn't able to operate without cocaine. Even spending an hour without the use of it would make her go berserk. "Prior to getting sober, I was one of those people who was like, I don't give a f--k, whatever. And I used that as an excuse to do whatever I wanted," Demi Lovato told the website.

Today, Demi Lovato has productively accomplished five years of her soberness. Although it is thought to be a huge milestone for her, the road to recovery wasn't pleasing at all. She checked into rehab after she got involved in a physical altercation with breakup dancer Alex Welch while on tour with the Jonas Brothers.

The songwriter took her struggle to Instagram this Wednesday and commented on her five-year anniversary of freedom from drug abuse. According to her, dwelling and altering her life styling in a Los Angeles-based facility would avoid her to return to unpleasant addictions. "So grateful. It's been quite the journey. So many ups and downs," Demi Lovato, 24, wrote.

Musical prodigy Demi Lovato has been vocal about her mental disorders as she is believed to be struggling with the bipolar disease. The singer is proud of her achievements as she has cut ties with her previous maladies including eating issues, bullying, bulimia and nervous breakdowns.

However, in April 2011, after acting as a contributing editor for Seventeen magazine, the Disney Channel star let out her personal struggles. On March 2012, Demi Lovato was also featured in a documentary titled as "Demi Lovato: Stay Strong."
