NBA News: Los Angeles Lakers Signs Rookie David Nwaba To Multi-year Deal
The Los Angeles Lakers announced they have agreed to sign the 24-year-old guard and LA-native David Nwaba to a multi-year contract.
The Los Angeles University High School graduate went through two 10-day contracts with the team, which meant the Lakers had to make a decision on whether they will sign the undrafted rookie for the remainder of the season after his contract just expired yesterday.
Ahead of Tuesday's matchup against local rival Los Angeles Clippers, Lakers coach Luke Walton met with newly-acquired General Manager Rob Pelinka and new Lakers President of Basketball Operations Earvin "Magic" Johnson to make the decision on whether the team wants to sign Nwaba or bring in another different player on a 10-day contract.
According to NBC Los Angeles, had the team opted to go with the latter decision, Nwaba would have been open and available for other teams to sign, but instead, the Lakers locked him up for good with the team.
Pelinka has said that the Lakers organization have been impressed by Nwaba's focus and determination, most especially on defense. Pelinka also said that there is a mentality about Nwaba that is infectious and that he works hard every day to improve his game.
Nwaba has truly brought some much-needed energy to both the Lakers and their D-League affiliate Los Angeles D-Fenders and has certainly earned his spot on the roster. According to NBA.com, right after the team's morning shootaround today, where Nwaba was not present, Walton confirmed that if the team has already signed Nwaba, and he would be available to play against the Clippers tonight.
According to league sources, the Lakers have agreed to sign Nwaba to a two-year contract, with the team holding an option on Nwaba's second year. With this recent signing, the Lakers now have a complete 15-man roster once again.
