College Hazing Ritual Gone Wrong: 14 Fraternity Members Arrested After Pledge Loses a Testicle
Fourteen Ohio college students were arrested Thursday night and charged with hazing after an initiation ritual last October cost a student one of his testicles.
On Halloween night, a local fraternity at Wilmington College known as Gamma Phi Gamma forced their pledges to undergo a hazing ritual that included stripping naked and performing different demeaning acts in the basement of their frat house. All three pledges were inducted into the fraternity that night, however one man was left with permanent genital damage.
During the ritual, the three pledges were blindfolded and told to get on the floor and act like they were swimming in the home's basement, which was filled with three inches of water. Court documents also revealed that the blindfolded prospective members had to stuff their mouths with limburger cheese and rub Icy Hot on their bodies and groins. They were then ordered to "f--k a sheep," which was actually a "ball of stuffing," reports Gawker. In addition, members of the frat used knot-tied towels to beat them.
However, one pledge, identified as Tyler Lawrence, was hit in the groin so hard that he had to have his testicle removed during emergency surgery at Clinton Memorial Hospital. Doctors also found bruises and cuts on his upper body.
President of Wilmington College Jim Reynolds called the hazing conduct unacceptable and imposed a minimum five-year ban on the fraternity, reports WCPO.
Back in November, Lawrence defended the frat and insisted that his surgery was caused by a "freak accident."
"It was a freak accident more than anything. It definitely wasn't meant to happen, not hazing whatsoever," he told WLWT.
The men will be arraigned in Clinton County Municipal Court on June 13. Hazing, however, is only a fourth degree misdemeanor that comes with a maximum 30 day jail sentence.
