NHL Playoffs 2014 News: Canada's Stanley Cup Drought Hits 20 Seasons
Hockey is by far the most popular sport in Canada. It's practically a religion in the country and rightfully so. Canadian-based teams have dominated NHL history since the league began operations. The two most successful franchises are the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs who have a combined 37 Stanley Cup Championships.
However, the land up North hasn't experienced any of their teams win the Stanley Cup in 21 years, since 1993. That's 20 seasons because the 2004 season was canceled.
The previous long drought for Canada was just six years from 1936-1941. How the mighty have fallen. The Montreal Canadiens won their last Stanley Cup in 1993 with Hall of Fame goaltender Patrick Roy and were the only Canadian team to make the playoffs this year. The team fell short of making it to the Cup after a game seven defeat to the New York Rangers.
Since the '93 victory, Canadian teams have had their chances to hoist Lord's Stanley Cup. Five to be exact. Four different Canadian teams have made it to the Stanley five teams and have a combined 0-5 record in the big game.
It started in '94 when the Vancouver Canucks lost against the Rangers in a thrilling seven game series. The Canucks lost game seven 3-1. Ten years later, which is the longest drought for a Canadian team to never make it to the Cup, the Calgary Flames lost to the Tamp Bay Lightning in seven games. The Flames had a 3-2 series lead but lost game six in double overtime and then lost game seven by just one goal.
Bad luck continued for Canada in 2006, when the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Edmonton Oilers in (yet again) seven games. The Ottawa Senators didn't put up much of a fight against the Anaheim Ducks in 2007. However, the Canucks took the Bruins to seven games in 2011. But they too would lose.
Four of the five Canadian teams that have made the Stanley Cup since '93 have gone the full distance in the series, all seven games, only to lose in the last game. It doesn't get any more heartbreaking than that.
Amazingly, Canada has more World Series titles since 1990 than Stanley Cups.
It's pretty unlikely the Toronto Raptors will be playing in the NBA Championship anytime soon, so maybe the Blue Jays will have to win the next championship. They did win the last Canadian sports title thanks to Joe Carter. The last time the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup was 1967.
Canada doesn't have a great chance in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, and the Winter Olympics only come once every four years. It's important that Canada regains its hockey success, or another sport just may take over.
