With "Orange Is the New Black" season two just days away from its official release on Netflix, the cast members and creators of the show decided to talk about "Orange Is the New Black" and some of their experiences with crime and real-life jail occurrences.

The writer and creator behind the female ensemble show, Jenji Kohan, said that it was the real-life Piper who inspired her to start the Netflix series.

"The book came to me from a friend of Piper's. And I read it, and I loved it, and I loved the world and the characters, and I loved Piper. So I went after it," Kohan said to The New York Times.

The real Piper (whose actual name is Piper Kerman) said, though writing a book about her real life experiences in jail was not for self-exposure, she did joke with her husband that her book would make for a great television series.

"My hope in writing the book was not self-exposure," Kerman said "It was the exposure of that world. I had this debate with my husband: He was like, 'It should be a movie,' and I'm like, 'No, it's perfect for a series because people invite characters into their life, again and again, episode after episode.' Literally, every day in prison, someone new shows up and somebody leaves."

Though Kerman's story on her experience behind bars comes as an innovative plot for many fans who watch, the other "OITNB" cast member Natasha Lyonne revealed that real-life jail time doesn't come as anything new for her.

Lyonne, who plays Nicky Nichols on the show, revealed that throughout her life, she's spent some time in "various holding cells."

"In my experience of living, for a time, in the underbelly of society, I spent a lot of time in various holding cells," Lyonne said." As wild as I was, when the cops show up and suddenly you're being handcuffed, it's so deeply shocking and terrifying, the loss of freedom."

Lyonne went on to explain that her "real-life" jail experiences allowed her to hone in on her 'OITNB' role of Nicky Nichols, who is a drug addict with a troubled past.
