Season 2 of the much-anticipated HBO series "True Detective" could be announced by the end of this month. In a radio interview, creator Nic Pizzolatto mentioned that casting will begin by the end of June, giving rise to speculation that official announcements may be made soon after. Of course, it is no secret that the stars of the first season will not be returning to the show. Lead actors Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are set to be replaced by other big name actors. With possibly only one month to go, new rumors and information regarding the series have been emerging online.

Speaking of his new characters, Pizzolatto says that he is deeply in love with all of them. He further hinted on a podcast with NPR's "To the Best of Our Knowledge" that the setting of Season 2 will be in California but not in Los Angeles. He plans to utilize some lesser known venues. This represents another difference for the show as the first season was set in Louisiana. Pizzolatto aims to capture a certain "psychosphere ambiance" like he previously achieved in Season 1.

Aside from changing location, three strong lead characters will star in the show this time around instead of the dynamic duo of the last season. This detail was confirmed by Pizzolatto himself, leading to more speculation from fans. It was previously reported that HBO started to look for two very big male leads, possibly to fill McConaughey and Harrelson's shoes. This suggests that the producers might be looking for Hollywood big names such as Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, or Christian Bale, as some fans have guessed. However, these rumors remain unconfirmed.

Another rumor suggests the possibility of a strong female lead character starring in the series, with reports pointing to Jessica Chastain. However, she has denied the rumor. While there is still no confirmed date for Season 2's release, many assume that it will return no earlier than next January, the same month that Season 1 first premiered on HBO.
