As we all know by now, J.J. Abrams is the director behind the highly anticipated "Star Wars Episode VII" film set to hit theatres on Dec. 18 of next year.

However, more "Star Wars" news has made headlines with the announcement that "Fantastic Four" director Josh Trank will direct a standalone "Star Wars" film in the future.

Sweet!

Lucasfilm, which is now acquired by Disney announced the release of several "Star Wars" standalones in the future back in 2012. Lucasfilm made the official Trank-Star Wars announcement on Wednesday.

"We're thrilled to welcome Josh into the family," said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy in a statement. "He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of episodes I through IX."

Josh Trank will join "Godzilla" filmmaker Gareth Edwards as a new recruit to upcoming "Star Wars" standalone, the LA Times reports.

Who will write the new film and when will it be released?

Well, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Trank's untitled "Star Wars" film will have a screenplay by Gary Whitta and is rumored to have a release date of Dec. 16, 2016.

"The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time," said Trank in a statement.

Although the plot line of the movie that Trank will be directing still remains unclear, THR speculated on some characters that the standalone might focus on.

There have been rumors that there will be a spinoff film on Boba Fett's story, Yoda's story, Han Solo's story, and even a film focusing on the untold adventures of Luke Skywalker.
