After Wild Chase, Border Patrol Shoots and Kill Suspected Undocumented Immigrant
Another suspected undocumented immigrant was shot and killed by the U.S. border patrol officer in Sunland Park, New Mexico. The incident occurred after the suspected undocumented immigrant fired at the U.S. patrol officers who conducted an investigation of possible illegal border crossing.
In an report from Reuters, the New Mexican state police released a statement that the Customs and Border Protection officers were conducting an investigation near the area between the United States of America and Mexico. This is when they encountered the suspected undocumented immigrant and chased him on foot.
The suspect fired at the two border patrol officers while chasing him. During the chase, the suspect was fatally wounded. Despite this, the border patrol officers tried to give emergency aid to the suspect and transported him to the nearest hospital. Later on, the suspected undocumented immigrant succumbed to his injuries. Meanwhile the New Mexico State Police is now conducting further investigation in the said incident.
On the other hand, this is not the first recorded shooting incident that occured along the US-Mexico border. As a matter of fact, at least 90 people have died since January 2010, both American citizens and migrants, as a result of encounters with U.S. border agents.
According to the data from Southern Border Communities Coalition (SBCC) published in southernborder.org, they have been tracking border-related killing incidents since January 2010 and many of the recorded victims were at some point brutalized, causing life-altering injuries. The data gathered by the SBCC is based from the information released by media coverage or press releases from Customs and Border Protection.
Meanwhile, 15 more were killed after allegedly crossing the border as of November 2019. Here are some of the documented border deaths since February 2019:
1. A Mexican National died on February 19, 2019 while under the custody of Customs and Border Protection in McAllen, Texas.
2. A 40-year old Mexican man died while under the U.S. custody. According to the report, the man died after exhibiting flu-like symptoms and renal failure. The man who is in the U.S. custody died at Las Palmas Medical Center in El Paso, Texas.
3. Two unknown persons died in April 6, 2019 in New Mexico due to car crash incident. The El Paso Border Patrol said that the car tried to avoid the deflation device that led the car to roll over.
4. A toddler, aged 2, died in the hospital while detained in the border. The mother of the toddler asked for a medical assistance after she noticed that the boy was ill. The toddler was then transported to Providence Children's Hospital in El Paso where the toddler was diagnosed with pneumonia.
5. A 16-year-old migrant boy died due to the suspected Influenza A Virus. The Guatamelan teen boy is the latest migrant child while under the U.S. custody.
