The Grammy Awards recognize the achievements of artists in the music industry. It features performances by prominent and well-known artists and present awards that have more popular interests. Moreover, the Grammy Awards are considered as the fourth major annual award in the American entertainment industry. It comes along with the Academy Awards for film, Emmy Awards for Television, and Tony Awards for theater.

This year's 62nd Annual Grammy Awards came as a surprise as lots of veteran artists were snubbed in the nominations. The nominations were announced on Wednesday morning and veteran artists like Taylor Swift, Maren Moris, Tyler, The Creator and Rosalia were all ignored in the major categories. As we know, Rosalia was awarded for the Album of the Year during the Latin Grammy Awards night. What surprised more is that the most loved artists like BTS, Halsey and Solange were completely ignored during the nomination.

However, a lot of the new talents were recognized like Billie Eilish, Lizzo and Lil Nas X who all led the 62nd Grammy. Meanwhile, veteran artists like Ariana Grande and Lana Del Rey finally received recognition in the major categories for the very first time in their career.

ARTISTS WHO WERE SNUBBED DURING THE NOMINATIONS

1. TAYLOR SWIFT

  • Taylor Swift's lack of recognition in the 2018 Grammy nominations for her album Reputation was not surprising, as the album alienated most of her fans with its visual identity and darker sound. However, her album Lover , is different. Lover satisfied most of her fans, as it is filled with romantic ballads and pop-friendly hooks. It was expected to be included in this year's major nominations, but received only three nominations with the most prestigious being Song of the Year.

2. BTS

  • The popularity of BTS and other K-Pop groups is undeniable. South Korea and Latin America's artists are becoming world-wide sensations because of their creativity. However, despite the fame and popularity of Korean and Spanish artists only one was nominated with major award. It was only Spanish singer Rosalia who was nominated. As you may know, she received the Album of the Year award during the Latin Grammy Awards. Meanwhile, aside from BTS, artists like Blackpink, Bad Bunny and J Balvin were not recognized. This is now an issue that surrounds the Grammys for not recognizing the K-Pop groups behind its popularity was even dubbed as the largest music industry in the world.

3. MEGAN THEE STALLION AND OTHERS EXCLUDED FROM HIP-HOP NOMS

  • It has long been an issue that the Grammys often times fall short in recognizing hip-hop artists and this year's nomination has proven that once again. Popular artists like DaBaby, Gunna, and Lil Nas X were not nominated in the Best Rap Album and worst of all was the total exclusion of Megan thee Stallion.

4. HIP-HOP PRODUCERS

  • 2019 is said to be dominated by hip-hop music. Hence, it is very surprising that the hip-hop industry received only few nominations. One of these examples is Tyler the Creator for his album Igor which is nominated as the Best Rap Album, but it should have earned more like Top Producer.

WHO WERE THE SURPRISED NOMINEES?

1. LIZZO

  • She leads the 2020 Grammy nominations this year. She is nominated in the four major categories such as Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best New Artist. Besides from these major awards, she is also up for Best Pop Solo Performance, Best R&B Performance, Best Traditional R&B performance, and Best Urban Contemporary Album.

2. LIL NAS X

  • The Lil Nas X has hit over 200 million Youtube views and was even included in the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. This year, Lil Nas X was nominated as the Record of the Year, Music Video of the Year, and Best Rap of the Year.

3. FEMALE ARTISTS WHO GAIN MORE RECOGNITION

  • This year's Grammy Awards is expected to be dominated mostly by women. Five out of eight Album of the Year Nominees are women while all Best Pop Solo performance of the year are female artists. Some awards dominated by women are the Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best New Artists.

The 62nd Annual Grammy Awards will be aired live on January 26, 2020 from Los Angeles' Staples Center on CBS and will start at exactly 8:00pm eastern time.
