Selena Fans Criticize Ally Brooke's Performance During Miss Universe
You can never please everyone. This is true for former Fifth Harmony member Ally Brooke whose tribute performance to Selena Quintanilla at the Miss Universe pageant last Sunday, was not well received by many fans of the late music legend.
The 68th edition of Miss Universe in Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, which crowned Zozibini Tunzi from South Africa as the winner, kicked off on Sunday night with Brooke's powerful performance of her singles "No Good" and "Low Key". While the top 10 finalists were introduced, Brooke sang a medley of Selena's hits "I Could Fall in Love" and "Dreaming of You."
Many people expressed on Twitter their disappointment on her performance, most of them saying that the artist sounds like she's struggling with the songs' low notes.
"That was not the best representation of Selena or her music," a Selena fan said.
Other tweets were even nastier.
One tweeted, "They having #karaokenight on #MissUniverse2019."
Another posted, "Making every #Selena fan's ears bleed."
On the other hand, there were still some who were moved by the performance.
"Listening to a #Selena song not being sung up to par on #MissUniverse2019 and I'm still crying. We miss you #Queen," said one tweet.
Brooke's fans also defended her, saying that she was not replicating Selena's voice but is singing her own version of the songs.
Born in San Antonio, Texas, Brooke herself always proclaims that she is a big Selena fan proven by her frequent cover of her songs. Moreover, she gave a passionate performance to "Dreaming of You" on this year's edition of Dancing With The Stars.
Despite the negative reception of her cover, Selena's sister Suzette expressed her appreciation to the tribute last Sunday night. On her Instagram account, she reposted a video clip of Brooke's performance with the caption, "Never imagined I would ever ever everrr hear this song sung at a MISS UNIVERSE pageant! (Not the best recording I did with my phone) @allybrooke Thank you so much for this! Truly honored you chose this song and honored her."
According to Latin Post, Selena, 23, was murdered by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldivar. Selena was called the "Queen of Tejano Music". It is said that the Latina musical icon is the symbol amidst the political and economic crisis that Latinx are facing today.
Ally Brooke rose to fame as a member of Fifth Harmony, a pop group created for the reality show The X Factor in 2012. She has been pursuing a solo career in earnest since the group disbanded in 2018 and its members Normani Hamilton, Lauren Jauregui, Dinah Hansen and Camila Cabello, all pursued their own careers separately.
Since then, the artist has been building her name in the industry and the recent performance at Miss Universe pageant is so far her biggest break.
Brooke also proved her versatility earlier this year when she competed at ABC's most recent season of Dancing With The Stars, in which she placed third.
She is set to release her debut solo studio album some time in 2020.
