After Receiving Asylum in Argentina, Evo Morales May Be Arrested for Treason
According to a statement released to the public on Saturday last week by the self-declared leader of Bolivia, President Janine Anez, the government of Bolivia will be issuing a warrant of arrest shortly against its former president, Evo Morales. The arrest warrant will contain a claim that accuses him of treason.
Morales is currently in Argentina. He was given refugee status in the country last week after a few days of President Alberto Fernandez's inauguration as Argentina's new leader.
Evo Morales had stayed in the territory of Mexico for a month after a controversial win in the election in Bolivia held in October. His victory in the election and his administration had been charged with manipulating the results of the recently concluded elections in the country of Bolivia. He had maintained power in the country for approximately fourteen years. Later on, he left Bolivia for the growing chaos regarding the October 2019 election results controversy.
According to a statement released to the public by Anez, it was Morales' choice to leave the country. She also said that Morales can return to the country whenever he likes. She said that in the following days, the warrant of arrest will be issued because the charges pressed against Morales are in the works.
Morales' victory in the October 2019 elections in Bolivia would've been his 4th term as the leader of the country. This was criticized by the Organization of American States for some irregularities. Morales had left his office and resigned after being pressured by armed forces.
According to a statement by the foreign minister of Foreign Affairs, Felipe Sola, Evo Morales will be staying for good in Argentina. He also said that Morales had requested asylum in the country of Argentina.
Upon his arrival in Argentina, Morales felt more comfortable in Argentina compared to Mexico. It was noted that Morales had left his country last November 11th.
According to a recent social media post by Morales, he said that his arrival in Mexico (Bolivia's sister nation) more than a month ago had left him sad. He had also expressed his gratefulness for Argentina's acceptance of his asylum request in the country. He also said his appreciation for the support given by Mexico and Argentina regarding his situation.
A well-detailed report of 100 pages was released last week regarding the accusations pressed against Morales after leaving Bolivia. The report was prepared by the Organization of American States. This report contained information that points to Morales for the manipulation of the results of the October 20, 2019 election results.
Some experts suspect that Morales' action to move to a country closer to Bolivia is his way of devising a political return to the country.
Last Sunday, the Movement Towards Socialism declared Morales as their chief of the campaign regardless of his absence in the country, the group still hopes that Morales will still get himself involved with the politics of his home country.
According to a Senator of the Movement Towards Socialism named Eva Copa, Evo Morales is still a key personality of their political campaign.
