A guide to maximising your overseas business trip

Heading off on an overseas business trip is both an exciting yet daunting prospect. Travelling abroad in the name of work can, on the one hand, be extremely rewarding but also exhausting. Remember, this is no holiday! Of course, there's always room to mix business with pleasure, and the key to an equally productive and enjoyable trip is preparation.

Maximise your business trip and try to make the most out of your time away from the office. Here are a few top survival tips to get you started...

Pack smart

It's true that preparation is absolutely essential when it comes to heading away and one dilemma you'll want to avoid is any outfit disasters. Swim shorts and loafers aren't a good look! Remember this is a work trip, so pack your favourite suit or smart/casual look. A portable steamer is a great addition to your suitcase in order to avoid any creased and crumpled blazers and skirts. Alongside suitable clothing and a pair of pyjamas, don't forget to pack other essentials such as earphones (you may need a little time out from the sound of your co-workers), a travel pillow and power bank.

Plan in advance

It's not just your outfit of the day that needs preparation, in order for a successful and enjoyable overseas business trip, you need to plan out your time away in advance. Do your research when it comes to hotels in terms of the best location and facilities available. Other details such as airport transfers and itineraries should also be locked down in order to avoid any last minute stress and panic, especially if you have a big meeting to prepare for.

Try to maintain routine

When flying long-haul, jetlag can often mess with your body and your usual daily routine. The last thing you want is to fall asleep during a meeting or be yawning through a brunch date with colleagues. Where possible, try to maintain your usual routine; this means fighting the tiredness and trying not to collapse onto your hotel bed and taking a nap after your flight. If you usually hit the gym in the morning, set your alarm and make the most of your hotel facilities. Sleeping in can often make you feel worse and overtired.

Ditch the taxi

Where possible, ditch the taxi and leave a bit earlier in order to walk to your destination. This is hands down the best way to see and experience a new city. Walking also allows you time to think and mentally prepare for your meeting or presentation.

Have fun (but not too much!)

Travelling for work is an amazing way to see more of the world, so it's only natural you'll want to make the most of it. Where possible, utilise any free mornings and afternoons to plan activities that will enable you to experience as much as possible. Of course, there always comes a limit and whilst you should be having fun on a work trip (work hard, play hard right?) you don't want to make a fool of yourself. Steer clear from consuming too much alcohol. You'll only live to regret it the next day.

Now you can look forward to your next business trip and ensure you make the most of it.
